IS 617:1994 outlines the specifications for aluminium and aluminium alloy ingots and castings intended for general engineering applications. This standard specifies mechanical and chemical properties of 23 designated grades.

IS 11890:1987 – SPECIFICATION FOR HIGH PURITY PRIMARY ALUMINIUM INGOTS FOR REMELTING FOR SPECIAL APPLICATIONS

IS 11890:1987 covers the requirements for 99.95, 99.90, 99.85 and 99.80 percent primary aluminium ingots for remelting for special applications. The ingots shall be manufactured from primary aluminium. Alumimum under this standard is divided in to following grades :a) High Purim Grade I – Ingots of 99.95 percent primary aluminium. b) High Purity Grade 2 – Ingots of 99.90 percent primary aluminium. c) High Purity Grade 3 – Ingots of 99.85 percent primary aluminium. d) High Purity Grade 4 – Ingot; of 99.80 percent primary aluminium. These ingots are crucial for industries demanding high-grade aluminium, such as aerospace and electronics, where impurities can compromise the end product’s performance.

IS 6754:1972 – ALUMINIUM ALLOY INGOTS FOR BEARINGS

IS 6754:1972 is dedicated to aluminium alloy ingots specifically formulated for the production of bearings. This standard specifies the requirements for aluminium alloy ingots for bearings. Aluminium used for the manufacture of aluminium alloy ingots for bearings shall conform to IS : 2590.This standard specifies chemical composition for cast alloy and wrought alloy aluminium for bearings.

IS 2590:1987 – PRIMARY ALUMINIUM INGOTS FOR REMELTING FOR GENERAL ENGINEERING PURPOSES

This standard covers the requirements for 99.7, 99.6, 99.5 and 99.0 percent primary aluminium ingots for remelting purpose. The ingots shall be manufactured from primary aluminium. IS 2590:1987 prescribes following grades a) Grade 1 – Ingots of 99.7 percent primary aluminium b) Grade 2 – Ingots of 99.6 percent primary aluminium c) Grade 3 – Ingots of 99.5 percent primary aluminium d) Grade 4 – Ingots of 99.0 percent primary aluminium and prescribes chemical composition of aluminium for these grades.

IS 4026:2023 – ALUMINIUM INGOTS, BILLETS, AND WIRE BARS

This standard covers the requirements of four EC grades of aluminium ingots, billets and wire bars. The following four grades are covered in this standard a) 1981 –– Ingots/billets/wire bars (Al 99.8 percent); b) 1971 –– Ingots/billets/wire bars (Al 99.7 percent); c)1961 — Ingots/billets/wire bars (Al 99.6 percent); and d) 1951 — Ingots/billets/wire bars (Al 99.5 percent). The EC grade ingots/billets/wire bars shall be manufactured from primary aluminium. Besides shape and size the standard specifies the chemical composition of various grades of aluminium.

QUALITY CONTROL ORDER (TECHNICAL REGULATION) ISSUED BY THE DEPARTMENT FOR PROMOTION OF INDUSTRY AND INTERNAL TRADE, MINISTRY OF COMMERCE AND INDUSTRY, GOVT. OF INDIA ON 31 AUGUST 2023 FOR MANDATORY BIS CERTIFICATION

The DPIIT, Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Govt. of India, has issued an order, making it mandatory for all aluminum ingots and castings as mentioned above to be used in India, whether manufactured in India or imported from foreign countries, shall mandatorily carry the Standard Mark of the Bureau of Indian Standards under a valid BIS licence. In short, it has become obligatory for all the manufacturers of aluminum alloy ingots and castings, wherein in India or overseas, to immediately apply for BIS licence and obtain a valid BIS certification licence before that the last date of implementation of the order,

i.e., 01 December 2024.

BIS CERTIFICATION SCHEME

The BIS Standards, IS 617:1994, 11890:1987, 6754:1972, 2590:1987 and 4026:2023, establishes a comprehensive framework encompassing various quality parameters that aluminum ingots and castings must adhere to. The Bureau of Indian Standards Certification Scheme is a vital framework established by the Indian government to ensure the quality, safety, and reliability of products available in the market. This scheme aims to safeguard consumer interests by setting stringent benchmarks and guidelines that products must meet before they can be deemed compliant. BIS certification covers a wide range of industries and products, encompassing the entire gamut of industrial and manufacturing activity. Various steps involved in the BIS Certification process are enumerated below:

Standard Identification: Manufacturers identify the relevant BIS standard that applies to their chosen product category. These standards outline the specific quality, safety, and performance

requirements that the product must meet.

Application Submission: Manufacturers submit an application for BIS certification to the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), providing details about the product, its specifications, and the desired certification mark.

Factory Inspection: BIS conducts an inspection of the manufacturer’s production facility to assess the quality control processes, infrastructure, and adherence to relevant standards.

Sample Testing: BIS collects samples of the product from the manufacturer for testing in authorized BIS laboratories or recognized testing centers. These tests evaluate various parameters specified by the BIS standard.

Certification Decision: Based on the satisfactory test results and compliance with standards, BIS decides whether to grant certification to the product. If approved, the manufacturer is issued a BIS certification license.

Regular Monitoring: BIS monitors the manufacturing process of certified products through periodic audits and market surveillance to ensure ongoing compliance with quality control processes and standards.
